Practical applications for AI in publishing have existed for a number years now, in areas such as statistical review and copyediting, but the recent and prominent emergence of AI authorship presents areas for both vast potential and great concern. Where are the boundaries for AI use in scholarly publishing and who should be setting them?

Jason is the Publishing Director at the International Anesthesia Research Society. He oversees all aspects of the IARS journals portfolio as well as the Society’s online education products and program. His previous roles in scholarly publishing have included book publishing and marketing, journal ad sales, and journals publishing.

Juan Castro, Co-Founder and CEO, Writefull
Dr. Juan Castro is co-founder and CEO of Writefull, a startup that applies Artificial Intelligence to academic writing. Juan finished his PhD in AI at the University of Nottingham, UK, and completed a few Postdocs in AI after this. His main interests lie in Natural Language Processing and Deep Learning, and how we can use AI to support everyday language tasks. At Writefull, Juan is involved in projects to help publishers, copy editors, and authors to speed up their writing and language checks, all using the latest AI techniques.
Marie Soulière, Senior Publishing Manager, Frontiers, & Elected Council Member, COPE
Dr. Marie Soulière leads strategic publishing projects in open-access publishing, with a specific focus on research integrity and quality peer review, balanced with operational efficiency and automation. She was heavily involved in developing Frontiers’ artificial intelligence review assistant (AIRA). She was elected to the COPE Council in 2020.
Sonja Krane, Senior Associate Publisher, American Chemical Society
Dr. Sonja Krane currently manages a portfolio of twelve journals and, in this role, she supports the strategic development of these titles and the implementation of editorial initiatives that enable the journals to excel in their fields. She has managed efforts to launch new titles, contributed to the overhaul of the journal licensing options in support of ACS Publications’ Open Science program, and led the successful development and launch of several Artificial Intelligence-Assisted tools across the ACS journal portfolio.
