Wiley and Projekt DEAL Extend Open Access Agreement into Fifth Year

Country-wide agreement results in 97% of eligible authors publishing open access articles

HOBOKEN, N.J. – November 21, 2022 – Wiley, a global leader in research and education, today announced the fifth year extension of its landmark open access agreement with Projekt DEAL, the countrywide consortium representative of more than 900 academic institutions in Germany

This extension will allow authors in Germany even more open access publishing options, with an additional 240 fully open access journals integrated into the contract for the first time. During the first four years of this groundbreaking agreement, Projekt DEAL demonstrated success on numerous fronts:

  • 1000% increase in the number of articles published open access by authors at participating Projekt DEAL institutions since the beginning of the agreement
  • 97% of eligible authors in Germany took advantage of the opportunity to publish their articles accepted in Wiley hybrid journals open access
  • 80% increase in usage of peer-reviewed research by academics in Germany over the last four years

“Wiley’s open access leadership has fostered a massive increase in open access publishing and readership for researchers, generating greater impact for research in Germany,” said Liz Ferguson, Senior Vice President, Wiley Research Publishing. “Success with Projekt DEAL and in over 40 more transformational agreements means Wiley is on track to reach 50% of overall publication output as open access, and we expect that percentage to continue to increase.”

Wiley’s agreement with Projekt DEAL is one of Wiley’s first transformative open access agreements and a cornerstone of the publisher’s approach to the open access transition. Wiley has achieved open access partnerships with over 2,200 institutions spanning 23 countries, which provides the opportunity to publish more than 69,000 open access articles each year. Transitioning established journals to full open access is a key component to Wiley’s open access strategy, and Wiley is committed to transitioning journals to open access; by the end of the year 28% of Wiley’s journal portfolio will be fully open access.
