If you haven’t signed up for October’s New Directions in Scholarly Publishing seminar yet, what are you waiting for? The early registration deadline is September 6, which is next Friday (right after Labor Day for those in the US)! So, why should you register?
First, we are excited to announce our excellent keynote speaker—Michele Avissar-Whiting, Director of Open Science Strategy at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI). Check out her LinkedIn profile. From Brown University to HHMI, she has had a significant impact on the scholarly publishing process and is well-prepared to give an outstanding keynote speech exploring the meeting’s theme, “From Trends to Tactics: Shaping Scholarly Publishing’s Near Future.”
Second, reverse roundtables are back! Presenters and organizers rotate through chats with onsite and virtual attendees that cover the conference’s three themes: organizational transformation, how publishing is responding to a changing research landscape, and developing our workforce.
Third, there is a panel of researchers discussing topics like how to select a journal, the role of artificial intelligence in teaching, research, and publication, and how funding mandates impact your publishing decisions.
Fourth, there are sessions about AI, the rise of Publishing-as-a-Service, and the shifting landscape of consolidation, competition, and cooperation. See the program overview below!
Fifth, networking is always a big part of our events! Relationships in the scholarly publishing community are very important to us, and after the seminar, in-person attendees have the opportunity to enjoy a private tour of the Library of Congress’s Rare Book and Special Collections Room. Space is limited to 20 attendees, so sign up early!
New Directions features 9 sessions over one and a half days, and the panels will host a diverse range of publishing professionals, researchers, and service providers. Sessions will address:
- New Paradigms in the Shift to Publishing-as-a-Service
- Consolidation, Competition, and Cooperation
- AI’s Impact on Scholarly Publishing
- Changing Research Landscapes
- Adapting Your Workforce
- The Publishing Experience from Researchers’ Perspective
Early registration discounts are available through September 6, 2024. Bulk registration discounts are available for virtual attendees. All registered attendees will have access to session recordings for 90 days after the seminar’s conclusion.
Thank you to our sponsors, Cadmore Media, Data Conversion Laboratory, Dimensions, Origin, and Silverchair. Limited sponsorship opportunities are still available! Contact Kristen Totaro at partnerships@sspnet.org to secure your spot.
