By Michael J. Mozina, SSP Communications Committee Cochair – Despite a blizzard that crippled a large portion of the northeast in mid-February, the 7th annual Tools of Change conference once again brought together some of the best minds in the publishing industry.
This three-day conference, held in New York, featured nearly 100 tutorials, sessions, keynote speeches, and workshops that were specifically aimed toward how publishers could better implement technological innovations into their publishing workflow. Session speakers explained such topics as how to establish an XML/XHTML workflow, the usefulness of metadata, and how to create more engaging ebooks.
Tim O’Reilly, founder and CEO of O’Reilly Media, the sponsor of the conference, delivered one of the keynote talks in which he shared his optimism about the future of publishing and why the inevitable transition to ebooks should not have publishers running scared.
As a first-time attendee, I found this conference to be very well organized. The sessions were engaging and packed full of information. Equally useful were the “hallway conversations” during which I was able to talk with presenters and other attendees on a more personal level.
Session summaries, presentations, and author bios are available on the conference website: http://www.toccon.com/toc2013.
