ALPSP, CUJS and Charlesworth Launch New Training Course for Scholarly Publishers in China

ALPSP, the Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers, is delighted to announce the launch of a new training course: ‘The Very Latest in Open Access in China and Around the Globe, aimed at scholarly publishers in China.

The session will be held on 6 July from 19:00-21:00 (Beijing time) and focus on the latest in open science, open research, open data, OSTP and Europe’s cOAlition S, and look ahead to future initiatives and prospects of open access (OA) across China. 

The new ALPSP training programme has been adapted for the Chinese market following a collaboration with Chinese University Journals Society (CUJS) and the Charlesworth Group. The two-hour session will take place via Zoom with plenty of time for live questions and answers at the end.  

To start, the ALPSP presentation will interweave open science, open data and OA and provide participants with an overview of the major policies in place in the US and Europe. It will examine what these mean for publishing and will include coverage of the different types of OA and relevant policies including the US OSTP and Europe’s cOAlition S.

Head of Sales in China at Charlesworth, Scarlett Hao will present case studies of its OA deals with the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Tsinghua University. She will briefly introduce the emergence and development of China’s OA, Chinese researchers’ awareness of OA and the publication of relevant papers, the OA model of Chinese journals, China’s open data and platforms, and the international cooperation of OA. 

Professor Tieming Zhang, Chair at CUJS will briefly introduce the emergence and development of China’s OA, Chinese researchers’ awareness of OA and the publication of OA papers, the OA model of Chinese journals, China’s open data and platforms, and the international cooperation of OA, etc. The future development of OA will also be discussed.

Speaker/tutor biographies: 

Dan Pollock, Silicon Guru Ltd, and ALPSP Trainer

Dan Pollock has worked in scholarly and professional publishing for 25 years helping publishing companies to successfully explore and exploit new digital opportunities. Most recently, he was publishing director of Jordan Publishing (through its acquisition by LexisNexis), having previously held digital product development and strategic advisory roles in organizations including Elsevier Health Sciences, Nature Publishing Group (running nature.com) and Outsell Inc. He is now an independent publishing consultant, advising organizations on publishing strategy, change management and new product development, including working with Delta Think Inc on Open Access data analytics. 

Scarlett Hao, Head of Sales, Charlesworth 

Scarlett Hao joined The Charlesworth Group three years ago and is currently in charge of the China Subscription Sales Team in Beijing. Prior to joining Charlesworth, she worked in London for two years and then worked in a state enterprise in Beijing. She has nearly 6 years’ experience in sales and marketing.  Scarlett Hao was heavily involved in the ACM-CAS OPEN agreement from 2020 and brought it to fruition in 2021. Since then she has made further Read & Publish agreements, including Tsinghua University for ACM OpenCAS Institute of Microbiology for the Microbiology Society Publish & Read, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Science for the Microbiology Society Publish & Read and other four transformative agreements.

Professor Tieming Zhang, Chair, CUJS 

ZHANG Tieming, editor in chief, Journal Publishing Department of Beijing Forestry University; President of Society of China University Journals; Board member of China Journal Association; Member of the 8th Science and Technology Commission under the Ministry of Education.

ZHANG has nearly 20 years’ experience in the editing and publishing of scientific journals. He has led a number of research projects for the Chinese Association for Science and Technology (CAST), Beijing Municipal Education Commission, and the Science and Technology Department of China’s Ministry of Education. As the project team leader, he and his colleges complied the joint Report by CAST and STM: Open Access Publishing in China (2022). He also participated in some consulting reports and research programs on the development and reform of China’s scientific journals.
