Frankfurter Buchmesse | Micro-Conference with The Scholarly Kitchen

Join the Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP) and The Scholarly Kitchen (TSK) Chefs for the latest in what’s trending in scholarly and academic publishing at the Hall 4.0 Academic Stage on October 17 at the Frankfurt Book Fair. In collaboration with Frankfurter Buchmesse, SSP and TSK will offer two insightful sessions exploring the with chefs, both offering a primer on current issues and providing insights on the future. 9:15-10:00 am | Session 1: Quick Bites with The Scholarly Kitchen Chefs 

The Chefs (authors), from the Society for Scholarly Publishing’s (SSP) popular blog, The Scholarly Kitchen (TSK) include experts from around the scholarly publishing industry. In this session, several Chefs will offer their perspectives on what you need to know about key issues currently simmering in scholarly publishing. Topics will include journal trends, the impacts of AI in information discovery, progress on the SDGs, ensuring trustworthy content, and communicating retractions. 

10:00-11:00 am | Session 2: Recipe for Success…or Disaster? TSK Chefs Answer Provocative Questions about Future Possibilities 

Scholarly publishing is continually changing, and we must prepare for possible scenarios beyond our control. From shifts in government and higher education policies to transformational technological innovations, this session will explore a range of provocations. Listen to several Scholarly Kitchen Chefs respond to theoretical challenges. 

Speakers

Todd Carpenter currently serves as Executive Director of the National Information Standards Organization (NISO), a non-profit association that develops and maintains standards for the creation, persistent management, and effective interchange of information. In this role, he works with organizations across the publishing, library and software provider communities, building coalitions to improve efficiency in systems to deliver content to users. Prior to joining NISO, Todd was Director of Business Development at BioOne. He also held management positions at The Johns Hopkins University Press, the Energy Intelligence Group, and the Haworth Press. He has served on the Boards of several industry and community organizations, including FORCE11, the Baltimore County Public Library, the Book Industry Study Group and the Society for Scholarly Publishing. He contributes regularly as a Chef on the Scholarly Kitchen and is author of dozens of papers on library and publishing systems. He is presently writing a book on our everyday interactions with metadata. Todd is a graduate of Syracuse University and holds a masters degree in business from the Johns Hopkins University. 

 

David Crotty is a Senior Consultant at Clarke & Esposito, a boutique management consulting firm focused on strategic issues related to professional and academic publishing and information services. Previously, David was the Editorial Director, Journals Policy for Oxford University Press. He oversaw journal policy across OUP’s journals program, drove technological innovation, and served as an information officer. David acquired and managed a suite of research society-owned journals with OUP, and before that was the Executive Editor for Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press, where he created and edited new science books and journals, along with serving as a journal Editor-in-Chief. He has served on the Board of Directors for the STM Association, the Society for Scholarly Publishing and CHOR, Inc., as well as the AAP-PSP Executive Council. David received his PhD in Genetics from Columbia University and did developmental neuroscience research at Caltech before moving from the bench to publishing. 

 

Robert M. Harington is Chief Publishing Officer at the American Mathematical Society. Robert has the responsibility for driving strategic growth and management of the AMS publishing program for books, journals and electronic products. Robert also serves on the MathJax Steering Committee. Robert came to the AMS from the American Institute of Physics, where he served as Publisher, successfully leading AIP’s move away from its traditional role as a provider of publishing services, moving on to focus on serving the publishing needs of its member societies and AIP’s own journals. He has forged an international career working in both non-profit and commercial settings, with rich experience across the United States, Europe, and Asia. Robert holds a doctorate in biochemistry from the University of Oxford, and a first-class honours degree in chemistry from the University of London. 

 

Lisa Janicke Hinchliffe is Professor/Coordinator for Research and Teaching Professional Development in the University Library at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She is also an affiliate faculty member in the University’s School of Information Sciences, European Union Center, and Center for Global Studies. She is currently the Chair of the ORCID Board and a Chef in The Scholarly Kitchen. 

 

Roy Kaufman is Managing Director of both Business Development and Government Relations for the Copyright Clearance Center (CCC). Prior to CCC, Kaufman served as Legal Director, John Wiley and Sons, Inc. He is a member of, among other things, the Bar of the State of New York, the Author’s Guild, and the editorial board of UKSG Insights. Kaufman also advises the US Government on international trade matters through membership in International Trade Advisory Committee (ITAC) 13 – Intellectual Property and the Library of Congress’s Copyright Public Modernization Committee in addition to serving on the Board of the United States Intellectual Property Alliance (USIPA). He was the founding corporate Secretary of CrossRef, and formerly chaired its legal working group. He has written and lectured extensively on the subjects of copyright, licensing, open access, text/data mining, new media, artists’ rights, and art law. Kaufman is Editor-in-Chief of Art Law Handbook: From Antiquities to the Internet and author of two books on publishing contract law. He is a graduate of Brandeis University and Columbia Law School. 

 

Charlie Rapple is co-founder of Kudos, which showcases research to accelerate and broaden its reach and impact. She is also Vice Chair of UKSG and serves on the Editorial Board of UKSG Insights.  In past lives, Charlie has been an electronic publisher at CatchWord, a marketer at Ingenta, a scholarly comms consultant at TBI Communications, and associate editor of Learned Publishing. 

 

Roger C. Schonfeld is the vice president of organizational strategy for ITHAKA and of Ithaka S+R’s libraries, scholarly communication, and museums program. Roger leads a team of subject matter and methodological experts and analysts who conduct research and provide advisory services to drive evidence-based innovation and leadership among libraries, publishers, and museums to foster research, learning, and preservation. He serves as a Board Member for the Center for Research Libraries. Previously, Roger was a research associate at The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. 

 

Tim Vines is the Founder and CEO at DataSeer. Prior to that he founded Axios Review, an independent peer review company that helped authors find journals that wanted their paper. He was the Managing Editor for the journal Molecular Ecology for eight years, where he led their adoption of data sharing and numerous other initiatives. He writes for the industry-leading Scholarly Kitchen blog, and has published research papers on peer review, data sharing, and reproducibility (including one that was covered by Vanity Fair). He has a PhD in evolutionary ecology from the University of Edinburgh and now lives in Vancouver, Canada. 

 

Hong Zhou is the Director of Intelligent Services Group in Wiley Partner Solution and he drives AI roadmap and strategies and leads teams to design, develop and promote intelligent services/products and to enable automated, intelligent, and efficient research and publishing journeys by leveraging AI, big data, and cloud technologies. He also established and heads the AI R&D Team, which designs award-winning AI-based solutions and next-generation information discovery systems for scholarly research. Hong has recently been recognized as the Honorable Mention at the 2024 APE Award for Innovation in Scholarly Communication. He was appointed as a Chef of the Scholarly Kitchen in 2023. He is also co-chair of AI special interest group in ALPSP.
