Webinar | Climate Change and Publishing—How Publishers Can Make an Impact

In anticipation of COP 2023, this panel will share pertinent information that scholarly publishers need to know about climate change from two key points of view: What challenges will climate change pose for the industry, and what can scholarly publishers, as science disseminators, do to help advance climate change research?

Publishers have the credibility and resources to play a key role in expediting the trajectory of climate change research globally by placing this important work front and center for decision makers at both the international and regional levels. They also have the opportunity to lead by example via their own solutions to the problems that climate change may pose directly to the industry. Our speakers will address the varied avenues by which scholarly publishers can engage with their audiences on climate change research.

Moderators:

Mia Ricci, Director, Publications, American Geophysical Union

Clark Holdsworth, Senior Manager, Communications & Partnerships, Accdon LLC/LetPub

Speakers:

Graham Brumfield, Head of Journals, Frontiers
Graham Brumfield joined Frontiers in 2022 to lead the Sustainability, Biosciences & HSS programs. Graham contributes to Frontiers growing list of titles that sit within the Sustainability portfolio, including Frontiers in Sustainability and Frontiers in Forests and Global Change, and he has been working with researchers in this field to support their publishing activities and aiming to provide tools and resources that help drive the impact and visibility of their work.

Alyssa Findlay, Senior Editor, Nature Climate Change
Alyssa holds a PhD in Oceanography from the University of Delaware, USA and completed postdoctoral work in Israel and Denmark. Her research ranged from marine and lake biogeochemistry to carbon cycling in Arctic marine sediments and integrated chemical, microbiological and modelling approaches. She joined Nature Climate Change in 2019 and handles manuscripts broadly in the area of climate change impacts, vulnerability and adaptation.

Kris Karnauskas, PhD; Editor of Geophysical Research Letters; Associate Professor, University of Colorado Boulder
Kris Karnauskas is a Fellow of the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences and an Associate Professor in the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences at the University of Colorado Boulder. Prior to joining the CU Boulder faculty, Kris spent six years on the faculty of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI). Kris completed his B.S. at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Ph.D. at the University of Maryland-College Park, both in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University. Kris currently serves as Editor for AGU’s Geophysical Research Letters and PLOS Climate, and recently served on the Scientific Steering Committee of the U.S. Climate Variability and Predictability Program. Kris was the recipient of the 2017 Ocean Sciences Early Career Award from the AGU “for important contributions to better understanding the tropical oceans and atmosphere.
