Scholarly Communications Internships and Practicum Opportunities

SSP’s Professional Development Committee offers the opportunity to learn about internship and practicum positions with publishers and libraries.  We invite organizations to post their positions here, where your positions will be seen by many people from a variety of disciplines.  To submit a position to this page for posting, please contact Karen Schmidt

Careers in scholarly communication are emerging within the publishing, library, and information fields at an increasing pace.  Training for careers in scholarly communications can range from degrees in library and information science to marketing, business, and computer technologies.  Scholarly communications positions tend to encompass a broader, more interdisciplinary skill set than traditional research publishing and library positions, often requiring expertise in two or more of the following areas:
  • web/network technologies
  • electronic publishing technologies
  • digital repositories
  • information architecture
  • standards development
  • researcher behavior and work flows
  • copyright law
  • contracts/licensing
  • social anthropology
  • business models
  • project/information management
  • human factors/usability

Internships in the publishing and library fields as well as practicum courses developed within degree programs provide an excellent way to gain experience and credentials in scholarly communications.  Following are web sites that often provide internship and practica opportunities; the SSP Professional Development Committee encourages additions and amendments to these links:
