by Barbara Meyers Ford, SSPN Editor-in-Chief
'Twas the night before deadline, throughout the publishing house,
All the copy editors were stirring, clicking many a mouse;
The articles were sequenced by the Editor there,
In hopes that the readers soon would take care;
To nestle with the issue on their screens or in bed,
While visions of research danced in their heads.
Then we on the staff took a brief break,
Looking to seize a brief respite, and enjoy our fruitcake;
When out on the web site there showed such a clutter,
We sprang into action with screams, not a mutter.
Away to IT we all flew like a flash,
Tore open the door and saw with abash,
The IT staff enjoying an early holiday show
While the web site went tumbling, upside to low,
Then, what to our wondering eyes should appear,
But a technical consultant filled with good cheer,
With a little wink, so lively and quick,
We knew the site would be fixed in a jiff.
More rapid than gigabytes the programming came,
As we whistled, and cheered, and happily proclaimed:
"Now, Homepage! Now, Titles! Now, Keywords and Authors!
On, Abstracts! On, Text Files! On, ads to sales foster!
To the top of the page! To the top of the book mall!
Now flash away! Flash away! Flash away all!"
As images that before your mouse do fly,
When you search and refine results by and by,
So up went our web site with pages anew,
With text all reset now, and in great shape too.
And then, in a twinkling, we saw the door ajar
So ever so quietly from not quite afar,
We drew out of IT, and were turning around
As out the door our consultant went with a bound.
Dressed in business casual, from head to foot,
With clothes not a bit wrinkled from having to reboot
Each part of our website from front to back,
But it looked so easy it took us aback.
Our eyes—how they twinkled! Our spirits—how merry!
We cheered our thanks, our bravos, and felt as if a fairy
And visited us this night before deadline,
To save our publication so fine;
With new features and functions,
Showing new Web 2.0 junctions.
We had broad smiles and a round of canapés from the deli,
That shook off the growls from each person’s belly.
We sighed and put files back into their places,
You’d never know the chaos we just had... there were no traces;
With a wink, our consultant enjoyed ham and cheese on rye bread,
Letting us know there was no more site upset to dread;
We spoke not a word, as all finished their work,
And filled all the web pages; then turned with a jerk,
And laying each mouse down as Windows we did close,
And giving a nod, we all then arose;
We sprang to leave and gave a relieved sigh,
As each “t” was crossed, we even dotted the “i.”
Then we all exclaimed with great delight,
"Happy holidays to all, please enjoy our web site!"
