New Resource from BMJ Journals Will Unlock the Hidden Value Within Medical Case Reports

June 20, 2008 - Individual medical case reports, highlighting rare or unusual conditions, are often criticised for being of peripheral interest. As such, mainstream journals can be reluctant to publish them. Those that are published are typically scattered across speciality and subspecialty journals. However, when looked at collectively, case reports contain a wealth of information and data that can be analysed to identify important trends or new areas for research that might not otherwise be apparent.

This is why BMJ Journals are launching BMJ Case Reports - a new online resource that will make over 1000 case reports available when the full site launches in September this year. To support the sophisticated functionality required to extract the full value of individual articles, an advanced new online platform is being developed for BMJ Case Reports, in partnership with HighWire Press.

"We believe that case reports will reveal their true value through aggregation and analysis," commented Janet O'Flaherty, Publisher at BMJ Journals. "Although several small repositories of case studies currently exist, without volume these offer limited insight. BMJ Case Reports will launch with more than a 1000 case reports, reproduced from articles recently published within BMJ and our specialty journals such as Heart, Gut and Thorax. We are now accepting submissions to build on this and create a definitive database of medical case reports that can be easily searched and analysed."

BMJ Case Reports will be available under an innovative new business model. "We wanted to blend the best aspects of a subscription model with an author-pays model," continued Janet O'Flaherty. "Anyone who wants to submit a case study or access the database can do so by becoming a 'Fellow' of BMJ Case Reports. Fellowship costs £95 for a year for an individual, giving them 12 months limitless access to the database and reuse of that content for non-commercial purposes. We will be offering Institutional Fellowships from 2009 (with a fee based on the institution's size), which then grants Fellowship status to all their staff, faculty and students."

BMJ Case Reports launches in September 2008, although a beta site is now currently available at: http://casereports.bmj.com. BMJ Journals are offering free Fellowships to BMJ Case Reports until the end of 2009 for the first 100 corresponding authors to submit their cases for publication.

CSHL Symposia & Archive Moves to HighWire's H2O Platform

May 28, 2008 - Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press (CSHLP) today announced that it will be moving its world-renowned annual series The Cold Spring Harbor Symposia on Quantitative Biology (CSH Symposia) to the new HighWire electronic publishing platform, H2O. The move will coincide with the launch of the CSH Symposia’s new 70-year online archive. The CSH Symposia have long been signal events in in many fields of modern experimental biology. Now the record of these events will be available for the first time in its entirety on the premier HighWire platform.

"Since 1933, advances in biology such as the structure of DNA, the genetic code, the discovery of mobile genes, the PCR and RNAi techniques, and the feasibility of a human genome project have been announced, debated, and distilled at our annual Symposia," said Dr. John Inglis, Executive Director of CSHLP. "The Symposia focus on a different and timely field of research each year, and the participants are handpicked luminaries and rising stars of that particular field. We are excited to be able to offer the complete record of this historically unique material online for the first time with the help of HighWire."

"We’re proud that Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press decided to move this vital series to HighWire," said John Sack, Director of HighWire Press. "H2O’s flexibility makes it the ideal platform for handling complex, non-journal content, such as the Symposia."

HighWire’s H2O platform infrastructure is designed to cooperate with emerging web services and technologies, keeping publishers ahead of the curve. Because the system architecture seamlessly accommodates content structured in many different ways, H2O works well with journals, books, reference works, and other media formats, such as CSHLP’s online laboratory methods resource CSH Protocols. Recent volumes of the CSH Symposia will be moved from current host, Atypon Systems, and CSHLP will be digitizing the complete archive for release in October 2008.

The archive of these historic meetings will be available online as a stand-alone collection for one-time purchase covering 1933 to 2003, and will include the following highly influential volumes:

  •   1946: Heredity and Variation in Microorganisms
  •   1953: Viruses
  •   1966: The Genetic Code
  •   1974: Tumor Viruses
  •   1980: Movable Genetic Elements
  •   1987: Evolution of Catalytic Function
  •   1990: The Brain
  •   2003: The Genome of Homo sapiens

The contributions recorded in each Symposium volume, and the accompanying photographs of participants in action, make a unique contribution to the scholarly history of science in the 20th century and the emergence of molecular and cellular biology as drivers of all aspects of current biomedical research. CSH Symposia volumes from 2004 to the present will be available online with the purchase of the current year’s hardcover print edition.

More information, including prelaunch discounts can be found online at www.cshsymposia.org.

Charlesworth's Green Status Made Official with ISO 14001 Environmental Standard

May 21, 2008 - Environmental issues have been at the top of Charlesworth’s agenda for many years. During the last two, Charlesworth has made significant investment in new plant and equipment at the Group’s manufacturing headquarters in Wakefield, UK ensuring their environmental best practice objectives continue to be met long-term. Charlesworth’s enviable green offerings provide litho printing with vegetable-based inks on recycled and FSC (Forestry Stewardship Council) certified papers as standard, with the option of recyclable laminate. Additionally, greatly expanded digital print facilities provide print buyers with the opportunity to reduce waste through Print on Demand.

Added to the fact that we produce everything in-house, we offer a competitive package for book and journal publishers, particularly those looking for ‘greener’ production of their titles. Quality Manager Mel Brooks said, "Careful planning and investment in recent years has resulted in the ISO 14001 Auditors concluding that as a newly accredited organization Charlesworth’s environmental position is ‘years ahead’ compared to most companies. The initiatives introduced to reduce our carbon footprint, including making best use of sustainable resources throughout the production process together with the ability to offer more digital choices were all crucial to our future proofing strategy."

Managing Director David Boothman added, "We are delighted to have achieved this very significant goal. Having now gained both ISO14001 and the ISO9001 quality standard, we are confident of gaining FSC Chain of Custody accreditation shortly, demonstrating our commitment to continuous improvement."

Meanwhile in the USA, Charlesworth in association with Allen Press, are co-hosting a series of FREE* environmental awareness workshops. The next one will be held in Philadelphia on September 3.

Charlesworth Teams up with CrossRef

May 20, 2008 - The Charlesworth Group has recently joined as an affiliate member and allied vendor for CrossRef Publisher Services. As a leading international supplier of print and publishing services, Charlesworth provides superior quality cutting edge typesetting techniques. Membership was taken in response to publisher client requests to create reference DOI links in the XML Charlesworth production services provide in order to produce hyperlink PDFs.

Charlesworth China production services utilizes the CrossRef DOI search and resolution function to incorporate into their clients’ XML files prior to delivery for online hosting. The DOI search is also used for automated validation of references against CrossRef data during the data capture and conversion process. This allows Charlesworth journal production services to be a one-stop-shop for journals to publish their content faster, more accurately, and with greater crosslinking.

The DOI, or digital object identifier, serves as a persistent, actionable identifier for intellectual property online. CrossRef is the official DOI registration agency for scholarly and professional publications, including journals, books and other content types. CrossRef provides primary publishers with the organizational and technological backbone to facilitate linking by associating DOIs with publisher metadata. As a CrossRef affiliate, Charlesworth can create links to all CrossRef member publishers without signing bi-lateral linking agreements and without having to track publishers' individual linking schemes.

Since 2007, CrossRef has employed the Charlesworth China’s global Rights & Licensing team to create and host a Chinese language web site (www.crossref.org.cn) as well as translate and print their promotional literature. These have been distributed by Charlesworth at the Beijing International Book Fair and Academic Journals Exhibition, which Charlesworth promotes and co-organizes.

Expansion into the Chinese market, particularly recruiting Chinese publishers of English content, has been an important goal for CrossRef. Charlesworth’s local knowledge and contacts combined with marketing expertise have provided a tailored approach to help CrossRef to introduce these objectives with localized Chinese print and online content.

Inera Introduces eXtyles Reference Correction

May 16, 2008 - Inera Inc., the leading provider of editorial and XML production software for scholarly publishers, today announced the release of eXtyles Reference Correction. The new Reference Correction feature - an enhancement to the eXtyles PubMed and CrossRef Reference Checking modules - automatically integrates data from online resources to correct errors in bibliographic references, quickly and reliably improving their accuracy before publication.

eXtyles is a suite of tools for Microsoft Word that automates error-prone and time-consuming editorial tasks. The Reference Correction feature is an extension to eXtyles reference processing modules that automatically edit bibliographic references to preferred editorial styles and add hyperlinks to online databases such as PubMed and CrossRef.

When a reference in a manuscript contains an error, these hyperlinks provide quick access to reliable online sources, saving time by eliminating the need for author queries or manual searches. The new eXtyles Reference Correction enhancement further reduces editing time and dramatically improves accuracy by automatically replacing any incorrect or missing reference elements, such as authors or issue numbers, with metadata retrieved from PubMed and CrossRef.

Rather than merely replacing an author's entire original reference with the reference indexed on PubMed or CrossRef, eXtyles Reference Correction intelligently merges data from online resources with existing data, providing warnings if significant discrepancies are found. This unique intelligent merge feature provides greater reference accuracy than simple replacement.

"Despite the significant investment publishers make in editing references, high error rates are still common," said Inera CEO Bruce Rosenblum. "Reducing the cost of reference cleanup and minimizing errors has always been one of eXtyles's greatest strengths, and eXtyles with Reference Correction is now the most sophisticated tool available to quickly and easily publish accurate content while reducing the overall cost of publication."

About Inera Inc.

Since 1992, Inera has focused on supplying sophisticated editorial and production solutions to the publishing industry. Inera's eXtylesr product family provides integrated tools for Microsoft Word and content management systems that automate editorial, reference linking, and XML production processes. eXtyles products are used in the production of over 1000 prestigious journals worldwide.

BMJ Journals Assesses the Changing Needs of Society Publishers

May 6, 2008 - BMJ Journals, a division of the BMJ Group, today announced a program of market research to reappraise the support that societies require from their publishing partners. Society publishers (whether independent or publishing under contract) are invited to take part in an online survey, which can be found at https://vovici.com/wsb.dll/s/13e72g32d02. Anyone completing the survey can be entered into a draw to win a free iPod Nano.

"Many societies rely on publishers to provide them with a contract publishing service for their journals and books," said Peter Ashman, Publishing Director of BMJ Journals. "The benefits of scale, access to a wide base of expertise and market reach that these relationships offer societies are all well documented. The market continues to change and publishers have worked hard to respond to this change, helping societies take advantage of new opportunities. However, increasingly, these changes are impacting on societies well beyond their publishing activities. This is an area we'd like to understand better, to see how publishers might expand or adapt their services, and perhaps provide more holistic support."

The BMJ Journals survey is supported by the Association for Learned and Professional Society Publishers. The results will be published later in the year, helping publishers understand how the changing landscape is impacting on societies and generating discussion and debate on how publishing support services might be adapted to meet these changing needs.

HighWire Press Launches Its New ePublishing Platform, H2O

March 25, 2008 - HighWire Press, the preeminent online technology provider for over 140 publishers, is proud to announce the release of its new electronic publishing platform, H2O. HighWire has rebuilt its platform from the bottom up, creating a standards-based hosting solution that embraces the new vision of Publishing 2.0. H2O will put HighWire's publisher partners at the forefront of online publishing. View a video of HighWire's Director, John Sack, talking about this vision.

"H2O supports the evolution of content as portable, allowing publishers to move information to where the user is," said John Sack. "Our new platform ensures that the HighWire-hosted sites are a valuable service to users: a place for people to do research, interact with information, ideas, and each other."

The first site to launch on the new platform is the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), with their beta site now publicly available. More information is at the HighWire site. While the new user interface seen on the PNAS beta site is the visible piece of H2O, the full rebuild will ensure that new industry standards will be infused throughout all the layers of any new H2O-based site, giving publishers maximum flexibility on how their content looks and operates.

HighWire is confident that the new H2O architecture is the most effective way to offer both publishers and their end users the ability to be innovative with the tools and information that the participatory web offers. As a fully XML-based environment, in addition to just handling XML input and output, HighWire's H2O incorporates standards like Atom Publishing Protocol (backed by Google & Microsoft), and powerful tools such as the MarkLogic Server.

"HighWire is taking full advantage of our XML content platform to deliver a truly agile publishing environment for their customers," said Andy Feit, Senior Vice President of Marketing at Mark Logic. "Through its unique modeling of the Atom Publishing Protocol interface, and the sophisticated features for user interaction with content - and for collaboration around it - the new H2O platform allows publishers to get the most from their content. What HighWire has done based on MarkLogic Server for Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences is quite impressive."

The H2O platform infrastructure is flexible and modular, designed to interact with many other systems, and to be extended with emerging web services and technologies. The data store is architected to seamlessly accommodate content structured in many different ways. Along with leading services for journal article-based content, H2O will also enhance the many non-journal sites, books and reference works that HighWire produces, such as the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press' Protocols database. H2O will provide the ideal platform for publishers to showcase e-books and other non-journal materials online, since it supports the broadest range of content types.

As HighWire develops H2O, it will also offer a suite of tools and services that will enable publishers to create collections of information, re-use these collections in feeds, widgets, blogs and networking sites. Publishers will be able to attach advertising and branding to content or collections, personalize offers and ads, and contextualize web pages based on the content being displayed and the user demographics. Such standards-based content can easily appear on a variety of devices - the iPhone, the iPod, Amazon's Kindle and other yet-to-be-seen new technologies.

Berg Wins Publishing Technology E-Publishing Award

March 10, 2008 - Berg Publishers is very pleased to announce that it has won the Publishing Technology E-Publishing Award at the 2008 Independent Publishing Awards. Berg was praised for its efforts to develop new digital strategies and partnerships and for increasing its sales from e-publishing activities. The judges commented: "Berg is making smart use of both technology and content to reach out to its customers. It is a shining example of a publisher previously limited to print but now making bold new moves into new mediums." The panel added that they were impressed by the high standard of entries in this category. "Independent publishers are clearly thinking very creatively about new technologies."

Commenting on the Awards, Berg's Managing Director Kathryn Earle said: "We are using our e-initiatives to exploit existing proprietary content from backlist books and journals and to showcase new IP. We are thrilled to have won the inaugural award in this important category - particularly amongst such stiff competition. Through this Independent Publishing Award, the IPG are at the forefront in recognizing the importance of new technologies to the publishing industry. Smaller publishers are nimble and can quickly embrace new channels to market. It's a very exciting time to be an independent publisher, now that we have a much more level playing field with the internet. We are extremely proud of this achievement."

Berg, an Oxford-based academic publisher, has a major online reference work on dress and fashion currently in development. It has a particularly strong backlist in fashion studies, having launched the pioneering journal Fashion Theory in 1997. At the end of 2002, Earle led a Management Buy-Out and attracted equity funding to build Berg's books and journals programmes. Post buy-out, turnover has more than doubled, with significant growth coming through e-publishing activities. Thirteen journals have been added to Berg's portfolio, up from two, and the books programme has diversified to include reference and textbook publishing. The company has also been awarded a BIC Product Data Excellence Gold Award for 2007-2008.

Charlesworth Sign Up 17 More Publishers for National Online Deal in China

January 31, 2008 - Charlesworth successfully negotiated individual contracts between the publishers and the National Science and Technology Library (NSTL) nationwide consortia in China. These agreements provide valuable new income from this emerging market, create strong online brand recognition, and promote online usage of the subscribed content by the Chinese.

Working as local agents in China, Charlesworth expands the reach of society and university scholarly publishers by providing access to their online journal and database content to NSTL’s end users, which total around 500 Chinese academic institutions, research institutes, and government departments.

Commenting on the successful conclusion of the NSTL contract negotiations, Sean O’Doherty, Vice President of Sales at The Berkeley Electronic Press (bepress), said, "Charlesworth staff provided a critical ingredient missing in our decision-making process: the cultural, political and technical context for doing business in China. Without their advice and conscientious efforts, I doubt we would have been successful in our first offering to a large library consortium in Mainland China."

Another publisher, the American Society of Plant Biologists (ASPB), signed with Charlesworth as its exclusive agent for online and print marketing in Mainland China. Charlesworth’s local expertise combined with US-based management and support will increase the exposure and sale of their two premier plant science journals in China.

"We are very excited about this development," says ASPB Executive Director Crispin Taylor. "Not only is our new arrangement with Charlesworth and NSTL bound to increase usage of Plant Physiology and The Plant Cell in China, but it is our expectation that it will also increase Chinese authorship and submissions to the journals."

The three-year renewable agency agreement combines a comprehensive marketing plan, sales support, targeted subscription marketing, translated promotional materials and a Chinese-language web site.

Throughout spring 2007, Charlesworth and NSTL worked with the publishers on a three-month trial that gauged interest in their online content among Chinese scholars. Contract negotiations with NSTL were concluded in the fall and have just been signed off.

Trials for the next round of National Online agreements will begin March/April 2008. STM publishers interested in entering or expanding their business in the Chinese market should email usa@charlesworth.com to avoid missing this opportunity for the coming year.
