ALPSP announces the publication of Scholarly Book Publishing Practice Report

March 9, 2010 – ALPSP has published the Scholarly Book Publishing Practice Report, the findings of a survey of academic book publishers’ policies and practices, authored by Laura Cox and John Cox.

10th March 2010, London, ALPSP has published the Scholarly Book Publishing Practice Report, the findings of a survey of academic book publishers’ policies and practices, authored by Laura Cox and John Cox.

Scholarly Book Publishing Practice is the first ALPSP survey undertaken to establish current practices in scholarly book and e-book publishing, to provide detailed analysis and statistics in this growing market. This report develops a picture of the market as it emerges and is a starting point for further research into how publishers are treating this rapidly developing arena. A survey was conducted of 400 publishers, both commercial and non-profit, consisting of ALPSP and other major association members. A response rate of over 60% was achieved including most major academic book publishers.

The publishers surveyed publish over 24,000 new titles each year. The collective backlist comprises nearly 350,000 academic and scholarly titles, covering reference, monographs, textbooks, conference reports, professional handbooks and manuals, and research reports. 63.2% of publishers publish e-books in one way or another, but they still account for a fairly small proportion of total book sales, with the average across all publishers at just 9.4%.

Findings of the report cover the following topics:

  • The size and scope of scholarly book and e-book publishing
  • Printing technologies
  • Sales channels
  • Digital file creation
  • E-book functionality
  • Services to libraries
  • Licensing terms and conditions
  • Pricing and business models
  • E-book bundles and collections
  • Perpetual access and preservation
  • Authors’ rights
  • Securing publishing rights
  • E-book revenue development
  • Publishers concerns the e-book market.

The full report provides a vast array of evidence about the current policies and practices of scholarly and academic book publishers. This report will act as a starting point for further research in mapping the practices of publishers as the e-book market continues to mature. It is hoped that it will provide clarity on a complex area which involves man more variables and permutations than is seen in the more homogenous online journal market.

Aptara Survey Reveals Publishers’ Evolving Response to eBooks

March 5, 2010 – STM Publishers Most Represented. First in a Series of Surveys Documenting the Impact of New Media on Book Publishing Operations

Falls Church, Virginia – March 4, 2010 - An Aptara survey of more than 300 U.S. publishers across the Trade, Professional and Educational markets reveals that a significant percentage of publishers are missing the opportunity to capitalize on the increasing market momentum of eBooks. The survey, conducted recently, is the first in a series planned by Aptara to document the evolution of book publishing in the face of society’s changing content consumption behaviors. The collection of data from a range of markets and participants is also intended to uncover the real impact of new media on publishers’ operations.

This first survey has revealed two major findings:

  • Most publishers are selling eBooks through their own eCommerce sites and are missing the vast consumer audiences provided by major distribution channels.
  • Publishers are producing eBooks that cannot be read on most mobile devices, limiting the opportunities for wider consumption.

These results explain why the number one challenge cited in bringing eBooks to market was eReader formatting and compatibility issues, and the number two challenge was distribution channel issues. “It will take some time for the eBook market to shake out and for any one device or platform to be deemed dominant,” predicts Dev Ganesan, President and CEO of Aptara. “For this reason alone, publishers need to recognize the importance of creating device-agnostic eBooks. This is precisely why we’re helping our customers prepare content with a device-neutral production approach. It’s the only way for publishers to have flexibility and future-proof their content for delivery to any device, platform, or new medium.”

Other findings include:

  • 53% of publishers who responded are offering titles in eBook format.
  • 60% who do not currently offer eBooks plan to do so in the near future.
  • 65% of publishers are producing eBook versions of titles that are also offered in print.
