Yesterday the Society for Endocrinology (SfE) and the European Society of Endocrinology (ESE) announced the forthcoming launch of Endocrine Connections – a new Open Access journal for the biomedical community. The journal is a joint venture between the two societies, to be published by BioScientifica.
“We believe the time is now right for a new kind of journal that will help stimulate cross-discipline collaboration and give our authors the highest possible visibility for their work,” commented Leon Heward-Mills, Chief Executive at SfE. “We already serve the core endocrinology community well with our established portfolio of journals, but as barriers between disciplines become increasingly blurred, we want to offer authors a new way to reach a much broader readership than traditional subscription-based journals can generally offer. We believe that Endocrine Connections is ideally placed to do this.”

February 9, 2012 – American Diabetes Association to Launch Full-Text Multiple Journal App – Developed by Sheridan.
Hunt Valley, MD – Dartmouth Journal Services, with support from the Sheridan Technology Lab, has been working with the American Diabetes Association (ADA) to create and launch a multi-journal app for both the iOS and Android platforms (the iOS app to launch in March 2012, and Android app slated for an April 2012 launch). The ADA Journals app will provide immediate access to full-text articles for users with personal or institutional subscriptions to Diabetes, Diabetes Care, Diabetes Spectrum, and/or Clinical Diabetes.
The ADA Journals app will provide users with the ability to download, search, view, and save abstracts and full-text articles, including publish-ahead-of-print articles. In addition to accessing the latest journal content, both as full-text HTML and as PDF, users can also access supplemental material, listen to podcasts, subscribe to and follow diabetes-related news feeds, bookmark content, and share articles via email, Facebook, and Twitter.
Although the app will initially provide free access to all content for an introductory period, the app manages the authentication of both individual and institutional subscribers via a simple and easy feature. A Sheridan exclusive – user-configurable offline content caching – gives users access to full-text articles, figures, and tables anytime, anywhere - without a network connection.
“The American Diabetes Association is extremely excited to work with Sheridan on developing the ADA Journals app,” said Christian Kohler, Managing Director of Scholarly Journals for the American Diabetes Association. “As a publisher of high-impact diabetes-related research, our goal is to make sure our content is as widely and easily accessible as possible for our readers and subscribers. The ADA Journals app will help us achieve that goal.”
Sheridan Full-Text Apps are the latest in a suite of mobile products developed and supported through The Sheridan Group companies, and with the support of the Sheridan Technology Lab. Others include Sheridan Mobile Alerts, Sheridan Mobile Editions, Sheridan Mobile ePrints, and Sheridan Print-to-Mobile QR Codes.
“Looking back on the last 15 years, we watched as publishers adopted the web, and the inclusion of an online journal website moved from a benefit to a requirement for all science publishers. Now in 2012, we are beginning to see history repeat itself with the rapid adoption of mobile apps. In the past few years it has been a novel offering for publishers to provide, but it is increasingly an expectation of users,” stated Michael Hepp, Senior Technology Strategist at Dartmouth Journal Services. “We’re excited to expand our services with the American Diabetes Association and provide them with a comprehensive mobile app service that will serve the needs of their users now and in the future.”

February 2, 2012 – nTech, an Open Access publisher, has today published the results of a survey appraising attitudes and awareness of the research community towards the Open Access (OA) business model in scholarly publishing. While the Open Access (OA) model debate rages on in the realm of publishers and librarians, it has taken much longer for awareness of the model to filter down to the author community – who should eventually stand to gain most from the barrier-free access to their work that OA brings with it. Evaluating the awareness and attitudes of researchers and authors towards OA, the InTech white paper - “Open Access: Awareness and Attitudes amongst the Author Community” - is based on both a review of current research and a survey sent to over 20,000 STM researchers worldwide. To read the White Paper and see for yourself the full results of the survey, go to: http://www.intechweb.org/js/ckeditor/kcfinder/upload/files/InTech_WhitePaper_FutureofOA_Dec11.pdf.
Today InTech, an Open Access publisher, has published the results of a survey appraising attitudes and awareness of the research community towards the Open Access (OA) business model in scholarly publishing.
The InTech white paper: “Open Access: Awareness and Attitudes amongst the Author Community”, is based on a review of current research and a survey sent to 20,000 STM researchers worldwide. The survey attracted an overall response rate of 1.3%, with 275 participants taking part and 253 (92%) completing it. The majority of respondents were researchers (75%) based at a university (70%). The data was sourced from an independent provider of contact data for the research community (Mardev).
Key findings:
Henk Compier, Managing Director at InTech is not surprised by the evidence supporting widespread awareness of Open Access within the research community, “We have seen great enthusiasm amongst our authors for the Open Access model.”
The survey also explored the most common concerns surrounding OA publishing; among these were author fees – over 65% (of the 256 participants who responded) said they were willing to pay author fees, 30% said they would be willing to pay if it helped ensure the widest possible audience for their work, while 38% would only pay in exceptional circumstances.
Henk Compier commented on this saying, “Any concerns that we hear from authors usually come from a lack of understanding of this relatively new model. Often we find that if we get a chance to explain our processes and dispel some of the myths surrounding Open Access publishing, authors are generally supportive of the principles.”
The full results can be downloaded from: http://www.intechweb.org/js/ckeditor/kcfinder/upload/files/InTech_WhitePaper_FutureofOA_Dec11.pdf.
By sharing the results of this survey, InTech hopes to encourage other OA publishers and advocates to promote understanding and discussion of the issues while making progress in shaping the model to meet the needs of the research community.
About InTech - InTech is an Open Access company within the fields of Science, Technology and Medicine. Established in 2004, the company is one of the earliest pioneers of open access and have since become one of the fastest growing publishers in the world today.

January 23, 2012 – Allen Press, Inc. (www.allenpress.com) will present its annual Emerging Trends in Scholarly Publishing™ Seminar on April 19, 2012 at the Embassy Suites Washington DC Convention Center.
Lawrence, Kan – Allen Press, Inc. (www.allenpress.com) will present its annual Emerging Trends in Scholarly Publishing™ Seminar on April 19, 2012 at the Embassy Suites Washington DC Convention Center.
The 2012 seminar is titled Learn, Engage, Adapt! Knowledge is Power for the Everyday Superhero. Leaders in the field of scholarly and electronic publishing will share their expertise, experience, and analysis on a variety topics ranging from research and publication ethics, the current state of libraries, to evolving publication models and journal quality metrics
Speakers this year include Michael Levine-Clark from the University of Denver and Jonathan Nabe from Southern Illinois University. Both are collections librarians, and in a session called Shapeshifters: The Changing Face of Content Acquisition, they will be joined by Allen McKiel, Dean of the Library at Western Oregon University, to share their thoughts on how libraries are transforming themselves to meet the challenge of declining budgets and disruptive technology. A look at the termination of Big Deal contracts, patron driven acquisition at the article level, pay-for-view, and other alternatives to traditional content acquisition models will make for a lively discussion.
Ethics and author misconduct are issues receiving a lot of attention lately, and managing this has become a major concern for publishers. The session Arch-Nemesis: Doing Battle with Author Misconduct will provide some valuable information from several different perspectives. Debbie Parrish, of Parrish Law Offices, which specializes in science law, scientific misconduct, research regulations, and intellectual property, will offer some legal clarification on the definition and parameters of plagiarism and research integrity. Camille P. Wicher, Vice President of Corporate Ethics and Research Subject Protection at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute will talk about the financial costs and other consequences of research misconduct. These presentations will be followed by an examination of several case studies.
A session titled Mysterious New Worlds: Exploring the Emergence of Mega and Cascade Journals will look at the success of some large open access publications in the areas of physics, genetics, biology, and medicine, as well as the concepts of second tier or cascade journals. These publishing models are transforming the way we think about the delivery, submission, and discoverability of content. The session will include a presentation by John Haynes, Vice President of publishing at the American Institute of Physics, on the development and launch of AIP Advances.
Other topics include new metrics being proposed for measuring quality, on the article and journal level, as alternatives to the impact factor, long used to rank publications on quality, importance, and implied attractability to authors. This discussion will also address the affect of impact factor on academic culture. The morning session devoted to roundtable discussions, which has become a popular staple of the seminar over the past several years, will continue this year with a variety of subjects of importance to scholarly publishers.
The Emerging Trends in Scholarly Publishing Seminar has been held in Washington, DC, since 2001. Allen Press introduced educational seminars for scholarly publishers more than 30 years ago to bring clients, partners, and experts in the scholarly publishing community together to share knowledge and experience that would help everyone better understand the issues facing the industry.
