Editor-in-Chief, Andy Carr, Nuffield Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Oxford, UK and founder of the Botnar Research Centre, explains “we believe open access is the way forward with this journal; instant online access to knowledge is what people expect.” He continues, “As a researcher myself I’m excited about the potential this journal offers our community to share our work with the world. Publishing in BJR provides you the opportunity to become part of a new wave of authors. We will publish to the same high standards as JBJS (Br)"

The British Editorial Society of Bone and Joint Surgery, publishers of JBJS (Br), are pleased to announce the launch of Bone & Joint Research (www.bjr.boneandjoint.org.uk), a new open access journal poised to revolutionise research communication in the field of orthopaedics.

Bone & Joint Research gives researchers and developers a new way to reach the global orthopaedics community more effectively. It also offers readers the latest frontline research and is completely free to access.

“Open access is now a well-established publishing model in the research community,” commented Peter Richardson, the Society’s Managing Director, “We see it co-existing with traditional subscription-based journals like JBJS (Br) which we have published for over 60 years. We saw an opportunity to harness our reputation and expertise in orthopaedic publishing to meet a clear demand from orthopaedic researchers. Our authors tell us that they want their articles to be published as quickly as possible, and then made accessible to the widest possible audience. They also don’t want to compromise on quality so we have maintained our rigorous editorial and peer review process for this new journal.”

Unlike traditional journals, all articles published within Bone & Joint Research are free to access online. Instead of libraries paying a subscription fee, authors, or their funding bodies, pay a publication charge that then ensures their work is instantly and freely available worldwide. As a not-for-profit organisation, the British Editorial Society of Bone and Joint Surgery has made publication charges as affordable as possible with waivers for low income countries and a special 10% discount for reviewers and members of partner Associations.

Editor-in-Chief, Andy Carr, Nuffield Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Oxford, UK and founder of the Botnar Institute, explains “we believe open access is the way to go with this journal; instant online access to knowledge is what people expect.” He continues, “As a researcher myself I’m excited about the potential this journal offers our community to share our work with the world. Publishing in BJR offers you the opportunity to become part of a new wave of authors. We will publish to the same high standards as JBJS (Br) and I believe the journal will quickly gain a reputation as a major new force in transforming the musculoskeletal sciences.”

Bone & Joint Research is now open for submissions, including clinical and translational laboratory studies as well as studies from the device and pharmaceutical industries.

The journal is now live at www.bjr.boneandjoint.org.uk or to submit your paper http://orthodox.jbjs.org.uk. To review for us or become a part of this important open access movement email us at reviewer@bonejointresearch.org.uk

Publishing Technology chosen to build pioneering academic publishing site for GSE Research

September 13, 2011 – Oxford, 13 September 2011 – Publishing Technology plc (LSE: PTO), the largest provider of software and services to the publishing industry, has been selected to build an academic publishing platform for GSE Research.

Oxford, 13 September 2011 – Publishing Technology plc (LSE: PTO), the largest provider of software and services to the publishing industry, has been selected to build an academic publishing platform for GSE Research.

GSE Research’s new online platform for research into governance, sustainability and the environment will be built using Publishing Technology’s innovative semantic web based publishing software, pub2web.

The new GSE Research platform will be among the first of its kind offering the option of an open peer review model alongside the traditional peer review system. This new publishing model is aimed at speeding up the submission process and encouraging heightened engagement and collaboration amongst users.

GSE Research’s prime objective is to bridge the gap between the scholarly research community, policy-makers and the corporate world by building an inclusive and interactive community that shares its views on papers and research in real time. It will be a completely digital model free of the constraints of the traditional scholarly publishing model, which has generally replicated content from print into online.

GSE is the brainchild of one of the world’s top sustainability researchers, Professor Walter Leal, and academic publisher John Peters (former CEO, Emerald Group Publishing).

Authors submitting content to GSE Research will be able to share research both inside and outside of the academic community with speed and efficiency. It will also be possible to discuss papers, opinions and network within the community using the site’s socially collaborative approach. All contributors will have the option to choose between an open access model and a more traditional subscription-based model when it comes to publishing their content.

Visitors to the site will benefit from the semantic web technology native to the pub2web platform combined with a number of features driven by the newly created taxonomy which factors in all areas of GSE Research’s content. The site will be able to connect discourse from a wide, interdisciplinary academic and public policy landscape and present contextual external content resources alongside GSE content, to improve discoverability and transform the user experience.

John Peters, Publishing Director at GSE Research Ltd, commented:

“I have worked in academic publishing for more than 25 years and this project has been my dream. It represents a totally new way for academics to collaborate and read other work, in real time, and hopefully with real results. This site will bring together academics from around the world, across environment, sustainability and governance, and allow them to share research and discuss topics with each other with greater ease. It should be an effective model for academics to share their research outside of academia – with business and government. The pub2web platform offers a high degree of interoperability and integration with external resources and systems, which was a key driver for selecting Publishing Technology to help bring our concept to life.”

Louise Tutton, Chief Operations Officer at Publishing Technology, said:

“As a new scholarly publisher, GSE are in the position of starting their publishing activities from scratch, without the same constraints of the existing publishing model. This has allowed GSE to move away from the traditional content ‘containers’ of journals and books and create an online platform that turns the traditional business model on its head. We have also been working closely with GSE to create a cross-discipline taxonomy within this specialist area. This new taxonomy combined with pub2web’s wider functionality, including text mining capabilities, will help users discover the content they need across GSE’s platform with ease.

“We are excited to be part of this ambitious new publishing venture. We hope more traditional publishers will follow GSE’s lead and take a radical review of how to increase discoverability of their content and best meet the needs of their customers.” she concluded.

The GSE Research model and approach has already received high praise from some leading names in the academic publishing industry. Professor Baback Yazdani, Dean of Nottingham Business School, commented: "This is an important field, and GSE Research are taking an innovative and welcome approach to scholarly publishing in the digital era," and David Worlock, noted industry commentator, referred to GSE as “a project to watch, but also a trend to be noted”.

GSE Research - GSE Research Limited is a newly established online scholarly publisher in the globally important areas of Governance, Sustainability and Environment. It publishes a variety of materials including working papers, presentations, student studies, and practitioner-derived research papers, as well as traditional scholarly research papers.

GSE addresses an important need. Every large organization in the world – private and public – is under pressure to ‘do something’ about sustainability and impact on the environment. This pressure comes from governments, consumers and consumer groups, employees and students, and indeed shareholders.

GSE Research aims to collect, organizes disseminate, support and provoke research to change the world for the better by providing a valuable bridge between scholarly research and practice in its target fields through its innovative approach to funding, reviewing, community building and pricing.

“We are thrilled to be working with SPIE, the leader in applied optical technology, and an organization that is advancing knowledge at the intersection of optical science and engineering,” said Thane Kerner, Silverchair CEO.

The Silverchair hosting of the SPIE Digital Library corresponds with a significant extension of our semantic infrastructure. We have heretofore focused on the life sciences. Hunt Valley, MD – Through a recent agreement with Blanchard Systems, Sheridan Magazines now offers publishers access to the SendMyAd smart ad portal, widely recognized as the most comprehensive ad preflight tool available.  The speed and accuracy with which the interactive web-based portal assesses ad quality is unmatched, delivering instant preflight approval, or—in cases where an ad fails the approval process—detailed troubleshooting information and powerful tools for making on-the-spot corrections.  An easy-to-use intuitive interface for both publishers and their advertisers, it is utilized by over 700 publications to date.

SendMyAd is not just for print ads; it also supports mobile ads for digital magazines on devices such as the Apple iPad and other e-readers.  SendMyAd easily accommodates a wide array of file types.

SendMyAd is customizable.  Publishers can set the portal to receive ads to their unique specifications, customize email notification messages, and customize approval cycles.  The system generates custom job tickets, allowing publishers to track ad materials from upload through delivery.  Upon ad preflight approval, SendMyAd automatically converts and delivers the file to the desired publisher destination.

Morris Media Group, a Sheridan Magazines customer, used SendMyAd to prefight and upload over 80 ads in its first week using the tool.  Said Publisher Geoffrey Morris, “The transition to SendMyAd was remarkably smooth.  Our production crew ? and, more importantly, our advertisers ? found the service easy to use.  Advertisers liked the added quality control as well.”

Sheridan Magazines’ Manager of Digital Services, Harry Wilson said, “Our customers have seen a dramatic decrease in the amount of time they spend working with advertisers to tweak their ads. The tools and interface allow the advertiser to achieve ad submission success easily and intuitively, minimizing issues and improving the production process.”

AAAS/Science Selects TEMIS for Semantics Content Enrichment Project with HighWire

April 7, 2011 – The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) announced its decision to work with its ePublishing partner, HighWire Press, and TEMIS, leading provider of semantic content enrichment solutions for the Enterprise, to offer a new, integrated, semantically fueled digital publishing program.

Washington DC, New York, Palo Alto, USA – The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) announced its decision to work with its ePublishing partner, HighWire Press, and TEMIS, leading provider of semantic content enrichment solutions for the Enterprise, to offer a new, integrated, semantically fueled digital publishing program.

A global leader in Scientific, Technical and Medical publishing, AAAS is the Washington, DC-based publisher of the renowned journal Science, an international publication with an estimated total readership of one million. The goal of this strategic project is an enhanced online destination incorporating the prestigious content of the Science family of Web sites, plus a number of other digital assets under the AAAS umbrella.

“We wanted a flexible and portable semantics solution that could plug into Science and our other research content on HighWire as well as pull in other elements from our organization, such as breaking news and information on careers in science,” said Deborah Rivera-Wienhold, Director of Business Operations, AAAS. “TEMIS’s impressive suite of tools for analyzing and leveraging content seemed ideal for our requirements to better serve our community by offering a unified and faceted user experience.”

TEMIS provides an enterprise-wide solution in content enrichment that can be extended to a variety of digital assets. “By making online information products more compelling, Luxid® for Content Enrichment Platform helps engage, retain and cross-sell to publishers’ audiences,” said Guillaume Mazieres, TEMIS’s Executive Vice president for North American Operations. “We’re thrilled to work with AAAS to make their highly respected content even more valuable to their broad community of users. HighWire’s open and scalable platform is perfectly poised to leverage our semantic enrichment on behalf of Science and AAAS.”

The AAAS project is part of a larger undertaking touching many areas of AAAS’ business, including the broad rubric of content enrichment. “Our goal is to figure out how to make our content more format-agnostic and self-aware,” said Stewart Wills, Science's Editorial Director for Web and New Media. “We’re focusing on ways to add value for authors through efficient handling of papers and articles, for advertisers through improved business intelligence, and ultimately for users through new serendipity and discovery tools to help them manage today's information glut.”

TEMIS’s solution for Semantic Content Enrichment, Luxid®, will play a pivotal role in AAAS’s plans to better align advertising and marketing activities with its editorial products, improve linkage of a variety of content, enhance search across its daily workflow and archives, and ultimately drive membership and revenues.

Luxid® automates the semantic enrichment of unstructured content, producing metadata that help search engines return more relevant results. It creates “facets” which are used to further explore the search engine’s results. Luxid® also connects content, creating a network of semantic ties between documents. This enables the suggesting of related and similar documents, furthering the process of knowledge recommendation.

HighWire has offered semantically-driven features and services for publishers for over 10 years. HighWire facilitates discoverability both through their long-standing, custom taxonomic and development efforts and through the integration of third party solutions, such as TEMIS.

“We are extending the boundaries of HighWire’s open platform through an integration tool kit, emphasizing connectedness in many forms, including semantics,” said John Sack, HighWire’s Director. “We are enthusiastic about helping publishers collect and connect content across many different repositories and look forward to working with AAAS and TEMIS on this important project.”

The Journal Display Program’s purpose is to provide society publishers an opportunity to have their publications and promotional materials represented at core library meetings, both domestic and international, throughout the year at a price far less than individual exposure would cost.  The meetings where representation will take place are the most prominent academic and medical library meetings.  The U.S. meetings include Association of College and Research Libraries, North American Serials Interest Group, Special Libraries Association, and the Charleston Conference.  The international meetings where journals will be marketed are the Frankfurt Book Fair and London Online Information.

“Allen Press wanted to offer Buyer’s Guide advertisers an opportunity to have greater exposure for their journals, so we developed the Journal Display Program,” said Melanie Dolechek, Allen Press’ Director of Marketing.  “Promoting a single journal, or even a few journals at these meetings, can be cost prohibitive for a single publisher.  By partnering with us and other publishers, individual publishers benefit from a considerable reduction in cost.  This cooperative marketing effort complements our own cooperative publishing business model and allows everyone to make the most of their marketing budget.”

The library industry meetings were selected for this program based on the large number of professionals who attend, many of whom have purchasing power for their libraries and institutions. The attendees include academic and medical research librarians, serial and acquisitions librarians, and electronic resources librarians.

About Allen Press, Inc. - Allen Press provides a comprehensive portfolio of integrated services in the broad areas of print, online, distribution and publishing services, partnering with scholarly societies, professional associations, and corporations worldwide.

Allen Press Offers Solutions to Publishers for Enhancing the Reader Experience

February 22, 2011 – eBooks and 2D Tags

Lawrence, Kansas – February 22, 2011 – The expectations of readers today, especially those who read scholarly and special-interest publications, are rapidly changing as new technology is introduced to consumers. The advent of e-readers, smartphones, and tablets in the marketplace has ushered in a new era in publishing. Possibilities for the delivery and consumption of content have expanded in ways unimaginable only several years ago, making accessibly even more important. As publishers explore exciting new opportunities in multichannel delivery and seek to respond to the changing needs and preferences of readers, Allen Press (www.allenpress.com) helps them navigate this new terrain with its two newest services.

Using the Allen Press eBook service, publishers can efficiently repurpose their articles, issues, and books for use on mobile and handheld devices, gaining greater visibility for their brand and opening up potential new markets. The creation of this additional deliverable integrates easily into an existing print or online publishing workflow as post pagination content in PDF or XML formats is seamlessly converted to ePub or Mobipocket. ePub is a file format developed by the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF). It’s supported on most standard devices such as the iPad, iPhone, Sony Reader, Nook, and Kobo. Mobipocket is the proprietary file format used on the Amazon Kindle.

Gerald Lillian, CEO, sees the eBook service as a natural extension of other core services offered by Allen Press. “We’ve been partnering with societies and organizations for more than 75 years,” Lillian said, “and we’re dedicated to creating services that our customers need in order to adapt to technological change and evolve with their members, authors and readers.”

Mobile tags, also referred to as 2D tags/barcodes, QR codes, and snap tags, are two-dimensional barcode images displayed on a surface such as a poster, flyer, card, store window, or page of a publication. Scanning the tag with the built-in camera and free reader app on a smartphone links the user to websites and online content. These tags have been in use in Japan since 1994, where they were originally designed to track Toyota auto parts. In the past year, mobile tagging has made a significant impact in the world of advertising and promotion and is now beginning to gain traction in the scholarly and special-interest publishing markets.

The Allen Press 2D Tags service offers an innovative new approach for publishers looking to create synergy and add value to their content by integrating the permanence of print with the agility of mobile. “This emerging technology opens up a world of possibilities,” said Tim Cross, a Product Manager at Allen Press. Tags can link from a printed page to a variety of resources, including the society or journal website, preprints, supplementary data, post publication comments, or membership and subscription renewal information. Allen Press assists with the creation, handling, and editing of tags and works with publishers to determine the most effective placement and use in their publication or project. “Some are looking at placing tags in their publications to create a richer and more dynamic reader experience,” added Cross.  “Others recognize the benefit of including these in printed marketing pieces and conference materials or embedding them in ads to increase their effectiveness. We’re definitely seeing an interest in adding an interactive component to print.”

Aptara’s PXE™ Digital Publishing Platform Enables Wiley-Blackwell to Achieve 75% Shorter Journal Production Cycle

February 15, 2011 – Aptara’s web-based PXE Digital Publishing Platform systematically enables and eases publishers transition to digital, while expediting content delivery to mobile devices, online and print.

Falls Church, Virginia – February 15, 2011 – Aptara, a pioneer in digital publishing solutions, announced today that its PXE™ digital publishing platform  has reduced Wiley-Blackwell’s turnaround time by more than 75% for six of its medical, pharmaceutical, and physics journals. Wiley-Blackwell, the scientific, technical, medical and scholarly business of John Wiley & Sons, Inc. (JW.A), is the world's foremost publisher for professional and scholarly societies.

Introducing Aptara’s web-based PXE has helped Wiley-Blackwell re-engineer journal workflow and accelerate production.  Turnaround times have been reduced from over eight weeks to fifteen days - getting critical peer-reviewed findings to scientific and medical communities faster than ever before.  An added value of PXE is that it is enabling Wiley-Blackwell to publish final content online even further in advance of its print editions than before.

“Aptara’s PXE digital publishing platform works like a well-oiled machine,” said Edward Wates, Global Journal Content Management Director, Wiley-Blackwell.  “We’re now getting content to our readership much earlier, and it’s delivered in XML, giving us huge flexibility to repurpose the content for any delivery channel – from print to PC’s, tablets, eReaders and smart phones.  Aptara’s PXE has opened the door to a better distribution model and new ways to monetize our content - faster.”

“Without a technology such as PXE, publishers are losing out on substantial time-to-market and cost gains -- that can make all the difference today with so much competition for readers’ attention,” said Dev Ganesan, President and CEO of Aptara.  “With this initiative, Wiley-Blackwell is driving real innovation in a market that rewards flexible digital publishing capabilities and nimble production resources – both of which the PXE platform provides. The result is that Wiley-Blackwell is benefiting significantly from reduced turnaround times, easier access to eMarkets and substantial cost savings.  We are extremely pleased to be helping one of the world’s most distinguished publishers profit from technology innovation.”

A web-based digital publishing platform, PXE provides an end-to-end multi-channel digital workflow for the creation of structured, reusable content with an easy to use, word processor-like interface. The PXE platform:

  • supports publishers’ existing workflows, minimizing staff disruption and implementation time
  • integrates content creation, editing and formatting into a streamlined workflow
  • supports multi-channel publishing with simultaneous outputs for eReaders, Tablets, PCs and print
  • eliminates traditional manual-intensive editing environments and processes
  • avoids the need to retrofit traditional production processes for new digital products

Aptara will be demonstrating an enhanced version of their digital publishing platform, PXE4, at the O’Reilly Tools of Change conference this week in New York (February 15 and 16), booth #301.

Publishing Technology and Sterling Publishing emphasize long-term partnership with first live installation of advance Contract, Rights & Royalties solution

February 9, 2011 – Publishing Technology plc (LSE: PTO), the largest provider of software and services to the Publishing industry, is very pleased to announce the first live installation of the new advance Contract, Rights & Royalties (CR&R) solution.

9 February 2011– Publishing Technology plc (LSE: PTO), the largest provider of software and services to the Publishing industry, is very pleased to announce the first live installation of the new advance Contract, Rights & Royalties (CR&R) solution.

Sterling Publishing, a committed Publishing Technology customer for over twenty years and one of the world’s leading publishers of non-fiction books, is a publishing subsidiary of Barnes and Noble Booksellers, acquired in 2003.

Previously operating on the VISTA-branded Royalties system from Publishing Technology, Sterling provides its parent company with publishing and distribution rights to thousands of titles. Sterling has an active list of owned and distributed titles and annually publishes and distributes new titles. The CR&R system today handles numerous contracts and authors and contributors in support of those products.

The new advance CR&R solution provides for the management and payment of royalties and subsidiary rights and includes electronic interfaces to support the import of title, author/payee, and sales data.  The CR&R system, from advance, manages a number of critical functions including royalty contracts, author and contributor data, royalty products and sales, royalty payment calculations, and statement production. And as the system is hosted by Publishing Technology, it allows Sterling and Barnes & Noble staff to concentrate on their core businesses, while Publishing Technology provides and maintains the hardware and software environment. Publishing Technology will continue to support Sterling’s VISTA Fulfilment and Warehouse Management systems.

Neil Glasser, CPA / CFE, Sterling Publishing, observed: “It’s was a pleasure working with Publishing Technology on the implementation of advance.  Simply put, these guys “get it”.  They understand publishing and they understand systems, which creates a seamless and efficient process.  We have many titles with complex author, rights and royalties arrangements.  Now we have one single system which works across the board. The advance interface is very intuitive and a significant step forward from our previous systems. It was a challenge integrating Barnes and Noble into the project, particularly dealing with the legacy system providers, but Publishing Technology made it easy.  Best of all, they delivered on time and within budget.”

Jay Teitelbaum, COO, Publishing Technology North America, comments: “Sterling presented an excellent opportunity for us to demonstrate the efficiency and flexibility of the advance system when replacing and integrating with legacy systems, across a complex user-base. As the first of our go-lives for advance in North America, it’s hugely rewarding the project has been such a success.”

The advance platform has recently been accredited with Supply Chain Excellence by BIC (Book Industry Communication), the independent organization for promoting standards for electronic commerce and efficiency within the supply chain.

Publishing Technology operates across the trade and academic markets, in books and journals, print and on-line. Working with more than 500 publishers, to date, the company has operated primarily from the UK and the US, but has recently also expanded into Japan, Brazil and Germany.

AACR Selects Access Innovations for Semantic Indexing of Content on HighWire

February 3, 2011 – The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) has selected Access Innovations as its semantics partner to enhance the discoverability of journal content on the HighWire platform as well as across the AACR organization.

The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) has selected Access Innovations as its semantics partner to enhance the discoverability of journal content on the HighWire platform as well as across the AACR organization.  Leveraging Access Innovations’ proven experience and their highly effective semantic tagging and indexing tools, the AACR will enable their readers and members to make connections between and among related information currently residing in disparate websites.

HighWire has actively supported semantic tagging for years using a HighWire-developed taxonomy* and selected classification tools, both within the HighWire Portal and on individual publication sites.  “As part of our mission to work collaboratively with our publishing partners, we have organized a Semantic Enrichment Working Group,” noted Kristen Fisher Ratan, Associate Director for Strategic Development at HighWire. “Comprised of HighWire-affiliated publishers, including the AACR, this group gives them a unique opportunity to discuss possible use cases for semantic enrichment and to make independent, informed decisions about the semantic vendor they wish to engage. HighWire will be proactively assisting publishers in implementing their semantics solution of choice on their HighWire sites.”

“We are thrilled to be working with Access Innovations to develop an AACR taxonomy that can be applied to our content, and with HighWire Press to allow us to present related articles across our journals,” said Diane Scott-Lichter, Publisher of the AACR suite of journals.  “We expect to expand these efforts to include semantic tagging of other AACR information such as meetings, workshops, conferences, grants, job postings, podcasts, and working groups as a second phase to this project. Making links between related items will drive increased targeted serendipity, providing improved access to the critical information users need.”

“Access Innovations has been growing and fine-tuning its Data Harmony software line since 1997,” noted Marjorie Hlava, President, Chairman, and founder of Access Innovations, Inc. “We are proud to be working with the AACR and its publications and with HighWire’s world class platform.” The Access Innovations suite of software products is composed of several modules, designed to simplify the management of databases or text collections, with support for editorial processes and to provide significant semantic enrichment. Access Innovations’ products adhere to all NISO, ISO and W3C standards, including XML, and are written in Java, providing platform independence for all users.

*The HighWire taxonomy was developed by subject matter experts over many years. It contains over 50,000 nodes and is particularly well-developed in the medical and life sciences areas. The indexing rules dictate exactly how terms are assigned to content. These rules represent significant intellectual property for HighWire and could be utilized with other classification tools. The semantic enrichment is stored by HighWire and is available for publishers to experiment with or use in whatever way is desired.
