Oversees marketing, sales, and distribution activities for AFB Press publications.

 

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

 

1. Provides timely and effective promotion for new and backlist titles, working with authors and AFB Press editorial staff to optimize efforts. Analyzes and expands customer databases and conducts online and other market research to inform promotional strategies.  Establishes goals for individual marketing efforts and monitors outcomes on a regular basis.

 

2. Forecasts annual sales projections and revenues for AFB Press books and journals, including advertising. Sets annual budgets for marketing, promotion, and conference budget lines.  Works with editorial staff to create preliminary Profit & Loss spreadsheets. Establishes and implements pricing strategies to achieve needed sales goals. Provides seasonalization for relevant budget lines and works to achieve annual revenues and monitor expenditures.

 

3. Develops and implements online marketing strategies for AFB Press titles, including creation of targeted merchandising opportunities on the website and the tracking of response rates for promotional campaigns. Oversees the AFB Bookstore Manager, the administrative and operational center for AFB’s online bookstore, working with Web Department staff to make enhancements as needed to online content and functionalities.

 

Monitors search functions, ordering and related mechanisms, and usability of the online store to ensure customer satisfaction and expedite sales.   

 

4. Oversees sales, circulation, and advertising for the Journal of Visual Impairment & Blindness (JVIB,) providing for effective renewal campaigns and new subscription efforts.  Provides advertising sales and marketing support for AccessWorld online.

 

5. Writes sales copy and oversees work of outside writers and designers to create effective departmental marketing materials, including print and online catalogs, brochures, advertisements, and product flyers, ensuring accessible design and production.

 

6. Arranges for publicity for AFB Press publications.  Collaborates with Communications Department to obtain timely press releases and inclusion of Press titles in other relevant outreach newsletters.  Oversees book review mailings, including identifying targeted lists of potential reviewers.

 

7. Sets goals for annual conference and exhibit program for AFB Press and Web Operations and oversees arrangements for selected exhibits.  Analyzes effectiveness of exhibit program on regular basis.

 

8. Oversees fulfillment and customer service operations with outside vendors for AFB Press books and periodicals.  Reviews and approves fulfillment budgets working to achieve most competitive cost structure. Reviews and approves customer service policies and procedures, developing new policies as needed.

 

9. Develops and manages business relationships with external publishers, strategic partners, and ancillary sales channels for distribution of AFB Press titles, including pricing, discounting and promotion to wholesale and retail markets. Manages international sales channel through outside vendors and journal subscription houses.

 

10. Supervises department’s Publishing Associate, who holds lead responsibility for coordinating AFB Press customer service and fulfillment activities. Adheres to AFB’s personnel recruiting and orientation policies and practices; communicates expectations, policies, information, goals, mission, and strategy; supports Publishing Associate in areas of job responsibilities, problem resolution, and benefits; identifies professional development opportunities; ensures policies and procedure compliance; addresses areas requiring improvement and opportunities for rewards and recognition. 

           

11. Performs other duties and special projects as assigned. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, plus 5-10 years’ experience in marketing, communications, or publishing environment.  Supervisory experience preferred.  Demonstrated track record in successful campaign management including goal setting, managing budgets, benchmarking and meeting critical schedules. Knowledge of publishing industry practices and trends in marketing and sales strongly preferred.  Ability to analyze sales and financial data, forecast sales revenues, set price points, and mine customer databases.  Must have experience in overseeing external vendors and in managing multiple projects within tight deadlines.  The successful candidate will demonstrate exceptional organizational and written communication skills, creativity in marketing design and outreach, and ability to identify and seize market opportunities. Strong computer skills with knowledge of Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Web protocols required. Must be willing to travel.

 

Salary Range: $66,344 - $82,930
