We are currently seeking a seasoned Managing Editor to oversee the editorial operations of the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research. The American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR) is an international professional, scientific and medical society devoted to bringing together clinical and experimental scientists involved in the study of bone and mineral metabolism.

 

The Managing Editor is responsible for overseeing the Journal’s peer review system, developing an annual budget, serving as the primary liaison with publishing vendors and business partners, tracking the Journal’s financial performance, reporting to the Editor-in-Chief and the Publications Committee, and staying abreast of important developments in scientific and medical publishing that affect the Journal.

 


Role/responsibilities:

 

·         Develop an annual budget, in conjunction with the Executive Director, and monitor performance to budget parameters

·         Supervise an Editorial Assistant and share supervision of an Editorial Coordinator with the Editor-in-Chief (EIC)

·         Monitor production of JBMR, both online and in print, to ensure that ASBMR’s vendors meet production schedules, quality standards and other expectations

·         Ensure that the peer review process is efficient, timely, and conforms to the highest ethical standards

·         Under the direction of the EIC, plan issues of JBMR to ensure timely publication of original submissions, invited material, editorials and other information, as appropriate

·         Communicate regularly and in a timely manner with the EIC and other editors on the status of manuscripts and plans for future issues of JBMR.

·         Draft responses from the EIC to author inquiries or objections

·         Respond to all inquiries from authors and editors in a timely manner; always display a professional manner when representing the Journal; treat authors as customers

·         Prepare the initial slate of candidates for appointment to the JBMR Editorial Board and present the candidates to the EIC

·         Prepare agendas and coordinate meetings of the JBMR Editorial Board, in conjunction with the EIC

·         Prepare Editor’s Reports as directed by the EIC

·         Stay abreast of business, editorial and ethical developments and practices in scientific and medical journal publishing; report important developments to the Executive Director and other appropriate parties, as determined by the Executive Director

·         Serve as liaison to the ASBMR Publications Committee, preparing agendas and coordinating meetings and conference calls, as appropriate; keep the Executive Director informed of Committee developments; communicate as needed with the Chair of the ASBMR Publications Committee

·         Nominal domestic travel to include Canada (scientific meetings, editorial offices, vendors and others)

 

Qualifications 

§         BA/BS degree required (English, Communications, Journalism)

§         Seven years relevant practical experience in STM journal publishing to include print and electronic media required

§         Professional experience should include a position that required familiarity with a peer review process, including online manuscript management, print and online production and business aspects of journal publishing

§         Experience/knowledge with any of the following is a plus; Endocrinology, Orthopedics, Rumatology, Geriatrics, Nephrology

§         Exceptional written and oral communication skills, to include report writing skills and the tact to interact appropriately with authors

§         Organization skills; demonstrated ability to meet strict deadlines

§         Strong knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint

§         Supervisory experience

§         Budget management experience
